AI receptionists for medical practices, compared

An AI medical receptionist is software that answers a practice's phone calls and texts with a voice or chat agent instead of a person. The good ones do more than take a message. They find the patient, book or move the appointment in the EMR, and hand the call to staff when it needs a person.

This page lists nine products that sell into that job, in alphabetical order. Every fact about a vendor comes from that vendor's own website, read on 2 November 2026. Caesar Health is one of the nine. We make it, so read our row with that in mind and check every row on a demo.

The short version

  • All nine answer with AI and hand off to a person. If you want humans answering, see medical answering services.
  • The difference is what happens after the AI answers. Some book straight into the EMR. Some capture a request for your team to schedule. Some book into their own calendar.
  • EMR coverage is the first filter. A vendor that names your EMR is worth a demo. A vendor that says "leading EHRs" needs to show yours.
  • Most don't publish prices. Two of the nine do, and both are dated below.

Prices as published on each vendor's pricing page on 2 November 2026. "No published claim" means we didn't find it on the vendor's pages, not that the product lacks it. Ask the vendor. "Not published" means no price on the vendor's site.

How to choose

Start with your EMR. Write down the EMR and version you run. Cross off any vendor that can't show a booking landing in it. A logo on an integrations page doesn't tell you whether the AI can book, reschedule and cancel, or only read.

Decide what "booked" means to you. A booking written into the EMR on the call means nobody re-keys it. A captured request means your team still schedules it in the morning. Both are valid. They cost your front desk different amounts of time.

Match the vendor to your size. Assort, Artera and Luma publish pages for health systems. RingCentral and Weave sell a phone system with AI added. Spruce-style communication platforms sit elsewhere; see patient communication platforms compared. Caesar, EliseAI, Hello Patient and Athelas sell agents into practices and groups.

Check what happens to the phone number. Some vendors want to own the line. Others answer forwarded calls. Ask before you sign, and read your current carrier's porting terms before you cancel anything.

Ask what the AI won't do. Every vendor here escalates somewhere. Find out where: a live transfer, a task in a queue, or the on-call provider.

Choose Assort if you run patient access across a health system or contact center and want specialty scheduling rules built in.

Choose Artera if you want one platform for calls, texts and notifications across many EHRs, with "30+ Languages" published.

Choose Athelas if you are open to running its own EHR, Air, alongside its voice agents. The voice agents also name other EHRs.

Choose EliseAI if you run eClinicalWorks and want a vendor that publishes an eCW partnership.

Choose Hello Patient if you run athenaOne and want a vendor that publishes the exact athenaOne actions it writes.

Choose Luma if you want calls, texts, fax and scheduling from one vendor that names seven major EHRs.

Choose RingCentral if you need a new phone system and want an AI receptionist with a published price.

Choose Weave if you want phones, texting, payments and reviews from one vendor, and you're a dental practice on a qualified PMS, where Weave's automatic booking applies.

Choose Caesar Health if you want the agent that answers the call to finish the booking in your EMR, and you also want fax, intake and texting handled on the same platform. Your EMR stays.

You can run more than one. If you do, decide which product owns each phone line and each reminder, so patients don't hear from two agents.

What to ask on any demo

  1. Show me a booking land in my EMR. Live, in my system, not a demo instance.
  2. Which actions are live on my EMR today? Read, book, reschedule, cancel, new patient. Get it in writing.
  3. What happens when the AI can't finish? Live transfer, a task, or a voicemail? Who gets it, and with what context?
  4. What does it cost all in? Base, minutes or conversations, overage, setup, and any add-on for booking or extra numbers.
  5. Do I keep my number? Forwarding or a port? What happens to the number if I leave?
  6. Will you sign our BAA, and when? Before any patient call reaches the agent.
  7. Which features are early access or coming soon? Ask for dates.
  8. What languages are live today? Not on the roadmap. Today.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI medical receptionist?

The one that books into your EMR, hands off cleanly to your staff, and signs your BAA. No single product is best for every practice. Start with the vendors that name your EMR, then run the same test call on each.

Is an AI receptionist the same as an AI answering service for doctors?

Mostly, yes. Both answer the practice's calls with AI. "Answering service" usually means after-hours and overflow coverage. "Receptionist" usually means the AI also books and reschedules. Ask each vendor which it does on your EMR.

Can an AI receptionist book directly into my EMR?

Several vendors here say theirs can, and name the EMRs. Weave labels automatic booking "For qualified Dental PMS only" and captures requests for everyone else. RingCentral's AI Receptionist books into calendars such as Google and Outlook. Ask for a live booking in your system.

How much does an AI medical receptionist cost?

As published on 2 November 2026: RingCentral AI Receptionist from $49 a month standalone with 100 minutes, then $0.50 a minute. Weave plans from $199 a month, with the AI Receptionist price not listed. The other seven quote. Caesar Health explains its quote process at pricing.

Is an AI receptionist HIPAA compliant?

Only if the vendor signs a business associate agreement with your practice. Hello Patient says it signs a BAA with every practice. Caesar executes one at contract signing. For the rest, ask for the BAA before any patient call reaches the agent.

Will patients know they're talking to AI?

That depends on the greeting you set. Caesar's agent doesn't claim to be a person. Ask each vendor what its default greeting says.

Do I have to change my phone number?

Not with every vendor. Caesar answers forwarded calls, so the number stays with your carrier. Others may want to host the line. Ask before you sign.

Is Caesar Health an EMR?

No. Caesar's agents work alongside the EMR you already run. Your EMR stays the system of record.
